    Abstract:

    Thecarbon/carboncompositesringpreparedbychemicalvaporinfiltration(CVI)withneedled
    feltaspreformisanisotropy.Theircompressivepropertiesandfracturemechanismofthreeprincipaldirectionswerestudied.
    Theresultsshowthattheaxialcompressivepropertiesaresimilartothehoopcompressivepropertieswithhighercompressivemodulus.
    Theneedledfeltcarbon/carboncompositesexhibitquasiductilefracturebehaviorunderradialcompression.
    Manysmallfragmentsoffibersandmatrixcarbononthe
    fracturesurfaceoftheradialcompressivespecimensareobservedandthefailuremodesareshearwithmatrix
    crushed.Underaxialandcircinalloading,thecompositesexhibitcatastrophicfailurebehaviorandthespecimensaredestroyedbydelaminationandsplitting.
